New Chair and Vice Chair Appointed

BIO-EARN's Programme Advisory Committee (PAC) held its first meeting on 7 October 2006. During this meeting, members unanimously elected Professor Jamidu H Y Katima as Chairperson and Professor Jane Morris as Vice Chairperson.

Professor Jamidu Katima is Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. His research interests include climate change, biosynthesis, industrial waste treatment, industrial ecology, water pollution modelling and urban wastewater treatment. Prof. Katima has been actively involved in the activities of chemicals management in Tanzania. He chaired the Steering Committee that prepared the Tanzanian National Profile. He was also one of the Lead Authors of Chapter 4 of the Third Assessment Report of the IPCC and is currently a Member of the IPCC - Task Force Bureau on Inventory representing Anglophone Africa, and President of the Institution of Engineers Tanzania (IET).

Professor Jane Morris holds a joint appointment between the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the University of Pretoria as Director of the African Centre for Gene Technologies (ACGT) and as Extraordinary Professor of biochemistry. She has played an active role in biotechnology and biosafety issues over many years and participated in various national and international meetings concerned with GMO safety. She has also been part of a number of South African government delegations promoting international collaborations in biotechnology. More recently she has been involved in the drafting of South Africa's Biotechnology Roadmap on behalf of the Department of Science and Technology.

Programme Advisory Committee
BIO-EARN's Programme Advisory Committee (PAC) is responsible for technical inputs to the Programme, evaluating the Programme Research Fund project proposals, and advising the Governing Board and Regional Coordination Office on various Programme implementation issues.
