New BIO-EARN Policy Brief: Managing Intellectual Property

Eastern African Universities and Research Institutes can do more to help Scientists

This new policy brief is based on the Intellectual Property (IP) and Freedom to Operate (FTO) assessment carried out in BIO-EARN partner institutions. It presents an argument for universities and research institutes in Eastern Africa to develop institutional IP management policies or structures in order to encourage innovation, facilitate international collaboration, assure scientists of a reward system, and attract private sector investment in science-based enterprises.

About the authors: The policy brief is written by Julius Ecuru (Uganda National Council for Science and Technology), Rose Rita Kingamkono (Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology), Jane Omari (National Council for Science and Technology , Kenya ), Shumu Tefera (Ethiopia Science and Technology Agency) and Ivar Virgin (Stockholm Environment Institute). The authors are Science and Technology Management Specialists and co-investigators of the BIO-EARN Project entitled, “enhancing product development opportunities and supportive policies”.
