The new BIO-EARN Programme period will run between 2006-2009. At the beginning of this phase, the management structure was revised to ensure regional ownership of the Programme. During 2006-2009 the eastern African network partners will be fully responsible for the management of the BIO-EARN Programme.

BIO-EARN's New Management Structure:

The BIO-EARN Programme is coordinated through the Regional Coordination Office housed at the Inter University Council of East Africa (IUCEA). Considerable coordination within the large research consortia will be undertaken by project Principal Investigators (PIs) and Lead Institutions.

During Phase I and II (1998-2005) the BIO-EARN management structure composed a Steering Committee, General Assembly, Coordination Office and network institutions. During these earlier phases, the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) was responsible for overall Programme management. The new role of SEI is to provide institutional support to the Policy Project (BIO-EARN Project 5), give technical backstopping to the Regional Coordination Office, and provide administrative and logistical support to Swedish institutions collaborating with eastern African scientists.
