The African Centre for Gene Technologies (ACGT), a national centre of expertise in 3rd generation biotechnology, is an initiative established by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the University of Pretoria under the Southern Education & Research Alliance (SERA) banner, with increasing involvement by other organizations, to create a world-class platform in gene technologies, with particular focus on gene and genome analysis and applications thereof.

The Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA) is a non-political organization of the National Agricultural Research Institutes (NARIs) of ten countries: Burundi, D. R. Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. It aims at increasing the efficiency of agricultural research in the region so as to facilitate economic growth, food security and export competitiveness through productive and sustainable agriculture.

The African Ministerial Council on Science and Technology (AMCOST) was established in 2003 under the auspices of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and the African Union (AU). It is a high-level platform for developing policies and setting priorities on science, technology and innovation for African development. A high-level African Panel on Biotechnology (APB) has also been established to facilitate open and informed regional multi-stakeholder dialogue on issues associated with or raised by rapid developments in modern biotechnology.

Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA) is the first of four regional networks of centres of excellence in biosciences supported by the New Partnership for Africa's development (NEPAD). BecA consists of a Hub that will provide a common biosciences research platform, research-related services and capacity build and training opportunities, a network of regional nodes and other participating laboratories distributed throughout eastern and central Africa for the conduct of research on priority problems affecting Africa's development. BecA is being established amongst a group of cooperation institutions that agree to make their facilities available for regional use.

The Ethiopian Science and Technology Agency (ESTA) is a governmental institution accountable to the Ministry of Capacity Building of Ethiopia (MoCB). The highest policy body of ESTA is the National Science and Technology Council. The Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) is a regional inter-governmental organization established in 1980 by the three East African Partner States (Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda) with the aim of facilitating contact between the universities of East Africa, providing a forum for discussion on a wide range of academic and other matters relating to higher education, and helping maintain high and comparable academic standards. The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), is an African initiative to achieve sustainable growth and development on the continent. A group of progressive African leaders presented the initiative at the G8 Summit in Genoa, Italy, in July 2001. NEPAD has since won the endorsement of almost every country in Africa. Its leaders are holding themselves accountable for achieving NEPAD’s goals and invite the world to join them as equal partners in realising their plan.

The Program for Biosafety Systems (PBS) assists developing countries to enhance biosafety policy, research, and capacity. PBS is run by a consortium of professionals and institutions with an unmatched level of knowledge in biosafety program and policy development in developing countries. The program will work initially with East and West Africa, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and the Philippines, and is likely to expand to other countries and regions in the future.

The Swedish Agency for International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) is a government agency under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Sida's goal is to contribute to making it possible for poor people to improve their living conditions. Sida works independently within the framework laid down by the Swedish Parliament and Government, which stipulate the budgets, the countries that will be included in Swedish development cooperation, and the focus of cooperation. The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) is a non-profit, independent research institute and think-tank specialising in sustainable development and environmental issues. University of Dar es Salaam

The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) in Tanzania was born out of a decision taken in 1970, by the East African Authority, to split the then University of East Africa into three independent universities for Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. For purposes of maintaining East African inter-university academic cooperation and communication, an Inter-University Council for East Africa was set up in 1970. The UDSM Council has established an Inter-University Exchange Programme, through which UDSM admits students from other East African countries mainly Kenya and Uganda. 

University of Nairobi

The University of Nairobi is the oldest in Kenya. Started initially as the Royal Technical College, it has grown through various phases to become a full-fledged University in 1970. Although other universities, both public and private, have emerged in the interceding years the University of Nairobi has remained the biggest in the country. The University has the largest concentration of scholars in the country. It also has a great variety of disciplines within its academic agenda, with full-fledged faculties in the Sciences, Medicine and Engineering and also Law, Commerce, Architecture and also has a number of research institutes in a wide variety of disciplines.
