Project 8: Transfer of constructed wetlands technology for decentralised wastewater treatment
Project description
The project aims at facilitating the transfer of
constructed wetland technology for decentralized
wastewater treatment in Tanzania and Uganda. It should
be noted that wastewater management is a major problem
in urban centres in the BIO-EARN countries. The project
is expected to contribute to reduced capital costs for
constructed wetlands, increased awareness and adoption
of constructed wetland in urban wastewater treatment in
Tanzania and Uganda.
Goal: The major
goal of the proposed project is to document performance
of existing CW systems, disseminate, replicate and
commercialize the constructed wetland technology so that
it becomes a common method of treating municipal
wastewater.
Objectives: The
specific objectives of the project are:
1. Dissemination Constructed Wetlands technology in
Tanzania
2. Development of Design and Operation Standards for
Constructed wetland
3. Development of the Operation and Maintenance Manual
4. Formalization and Standardization of CW Technology
5. Market research and economic analysis
6. Baseline data from existing wetlands
7. Review of Wetland Design Procedure
8. Dissemination of CW Technology Awareness in Uganda
Expected outputs
1. Constructed Wetland Technology well known and
adopted
2. Operation and Maintenance Manual for CW
3. Standardization of CW technology
4. Economic Analysis of CW technology
5. Performance Data if CW
6. Reviewed Design Procedures
7. Increased CW Awareness in Uganda

Implementation Status The project is at the inception stage and no outcome results have been generated so far. It should be noted that wastewater management is a major problem in urban centres in the BIO-EARN countries. Since implementation of the project activities had just begun, an extension will be required to execute all the planned activities if the target outputs and resultant outcomes are to be realized.
Project partners: The
project is implemented by the following institutions;
University of Dar es Salaam, Makerere University,
Technology Transfer and Technology Centre, University of
Dar es Salaam Entrepreneurship .Center (UDEC), Nairobi
Convention, UNEP-GEF WIO-LaB Project, AGENDA for
Environmental and Responsible Development, National
Environmental Management Council (NEMC).
