The BIO-EARN Programme (2006-09) has developed an Innovation Fund, focusing on R4D, innovation and product development partnerships targeted to Eastern African needs and conditions.

The Innovation Fund will be instrumental in supporting the much needed technology transfer entrepreneurship and business development skills in the public sector, and the movement of interesting and promising technologies from the laboratory to the market.

BIO-EARN Programme (2006-09) will operate four Innovation Fund Projects.

  • Enhanced tissue culture plants for eastern Africa

  • Harnessing the commercial potential of the indigenous malted and fermented cereal products

  • Transfer of constructed wetlands technology for decentralised wastewater treatment

  • Enset agro processing: pilot scale production of starch for industrial and food application

It is anticipated that the Innovation Fund will further strengthen the ability of BIO-EARN network partners to build functional linkages, and technology diffusion pathways for disseminating strategic technologies/ products generated within the BIO-EARN research consortia.

In addition to the four Innovation Fund projects, the BIO-EARN Programme will operate four Research for Development (R4D) projects and one Policy project.
